There is ecstasy in paying attention. Anyone who wants to can be surprised by the beauty or pain of the natural world, of the human mind and heart, and can try to capture just that - the details, the nuance, what is. (annie lamott)

Global Night Commute

April 29th was a special night. My friends and I joined up with over 3,000 people within our city - and over 100,000 people across the country - who participated in the Global Night Commute, sponsored by our friends at Invisible Children. We filed in a multi-mile-long line to walk 4 miles and then most slept outside for the night.

On a rainy Saturday night, we joined a group of passionate youth who are outraged by the war in Northern Uganda and the consequences that have caused thousands of children to commute each night to public places so they do not fear the Lords Resistance Army abductions in the villages at night. It's wrong. Just absolutely, unarguably wrong.

Here's a picture of one of the IDP camps in Northern Uganda.

Gary Haugen says that by some great mystery and enormous privilege, God has chosen to use his people, empowered by his Spirit, to complete this task of pursuing justice. God chooses to limit himself to do it through the obedience of his people. Few things inspire me more than being among people who feel the weight of what it means to be a responsible, loving citizen of humanity - and who choose to use their voices and their lives to speak up for someone else. It's such a beautiful part of being a human being. We are called to this, even if one voice feels quiet and insignificant. History has shown that change and improvement happen when people are unified and committed to love, justice and mercy.
